JAKARTA, Headline24.id – DPR proposes a minimum teacher salary of Rp5 million per month as part of efforts to improve the welfare of educators in Indonesia. The proposal was submitted by the Deputy Chairman of Commission X of the DPR RI, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, who considers this figure to be a decent minimum wage for teachers.

According to Lalu, improving teacher welfare must be a serious concern for the government, given their strategic role in human resource development.

"We have calculated in Commission X, a minimum of Rp 5 million is a decent figure for teacher welfare," said Lalu Hadrian when met at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Wednesday (24/6/2026).

The proposal emerged amidst discussions on government policies related to improving teacher welfare, which is expected to be included in the draft State Budget (APBN) for 2027.

DPR Proposes Minimum Teacher Salary of Rp5 Million

Lalu Hadrian explained that teacher welfare has indeed seen an increase in recent years. However, according to him, this condition still does not fully meet the needs of educators.

Therefore, Commission X of the DPR urges the government to formulate a more decent salary system for teachers, both those with civil servant status (ASN) and non-ASN.

He believes that an increase in teacher income can have a positive impact on the quality of national education because educators will have better room to focus on their duties.

Teacher Salary Increase Included in 2027 State Budget Discussion

According to Lalu, the government has prepared various schemes to improve teacher welfare in the draft State Budget for 2027.

As a working partner of the government in the field of education, Commission X of the DPR will closely examine the direction of these policies when the President delivers the financial note and the draft State Budget on August 16.

"We will see in his financial note speech on August 16. However, we believe the President has considered this because he always states that teacher welfare is a priority," he said.

This discussion is considered important because it concerns millions of educators who are the backbone of the national education system.

Prabowo Highlights State Budget Leakage

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto touched upon the issue of state budget leakage, which he believes impacts the government's ability to improve the welfare of teachers and civil servants.

In his speech at the closing of the National Deliberation of Ulama and the Grand Conference of Nahdlatul Ulama 2026 in Bangkalan, East Java, Prabowo revealed state losses due to fraudulent export reporting practices amounting to trillions of rupiah.

"We have lost 908 billion dollars over 34 years, or Rp 15 trillion. Rp 15 trillion, ladies and gentlemen, all this data is out, I want to convey it in this forum," said Prabowo, Tuesday (23/6/2026).

According to the President, this budget leakage reduces the state's capacity to allocate larger budgets for various sectors, including education.

President States Teacher Welfare is a Priority

Prabowo emphasized that improving teacher welfare remains one of the government's priorities. However, he noted that limited available budget is a challenge that must be resolved first.

"I want you, NU members, as leaders, as ulama, as teachers, as guides to the people, to understand why teachers' salaries cannot be good, why civil servants' salaries cannot be good, why the budget is always insufficient. Because there is no money," said Prabowo.

This statement then garnered attention from the DPR, which urged the government to continue seeking solutions to improve the welfare of educators.

With the discussion of the 2027 State Budget about to begin, the proposal for a minimum teacher salary of Rp5 million is expected to be one of the issues that will receive attention in the formulation of next year's education budget policy.
